XXL Style File

As winter truly sets in - in all its brilliant frost-forming, sneeze-inducing, red nose-provoking joy - perhaps its about time to think big. That is, think XXL style for the ultimate winter warmer.

And, while one may worry how oversized coat numbers could drown a small frame, or overwhelm a less than model-esque height (sisters, I feel your pain) if you simply take a few tips from the pros, the look is an easy one to achieve.

And who are these pros? Well, lets turn to those Scandinavian stylistas who have to deal with below zero temperatures and darkened days every year - and yet, unlike us blustering Brits, they remain warm and in super style. For example, the girls over at anywho.dk display a multitude of oversized outerwear in their brilliant outfit posts.

Just look at the skill implemented in their extra large, baggy looks. Take tips from these Danish beauties with layer upon layer upon layer: their denim shirts, cardigans and chunky boots are the perfect accompaniment to an XXL coat. Also, take note of the minimal colour schemes of such a layered look - by sticking to a single block colour such as blue or black, the look is more streamlined, less street tramp.

Other styling tips are easily found on the catwalk - from 3.1 Philip Lim to Chloe, camel coats were of course big news for this fall. Indeed, they were XXL news, with camel-coloured coats falling to below the knee and even dragging close to the floor. The top tip to take from such outsized outerwear? Cinch in coats with a skinny belt, tied just so - to give you shapeliness amidst the swathes of material, its an essential move.

Michael Kors Fall 2010

Elsewhere the message was to keep the inner silhouettes skinny and streamlined, with designers such as Michael Kors showcasing fluid maxi dresses underneath tailored boyfriend coats. What’s more, a skinny column under an oversized jacket is perfectly offset by wearing said jacket cape-style: that is, draped over your shoulders for that nonchalant, fashion editor look.

So, with tips such as these, you’ll be all set to think big style during the big chill. And hey, you may have to deal with a lot of material on the bus ride home, but you’ll never complain of the cold again! (No promises, mind).
