‘Tis the Season to be Novelty
‘Tis the season to be novelty, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-no, seriously. Christmas is coming, and my motto for the cheesiest holiday of them all? If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. That is to say, its just about the right time of year to match cheese with equal cheese, and opt for a novelty festive jumper to see you through all that darn Christmas cheer.
However, this needn’t mean accepting your Nan’s knitted, bobbly, possibly maroon-coloured gift with a grin-and-bare-it smile, forcing yourself to wear the itchy thing til the day your Advent Calendar runs out… No, no. Instead, this year designers have on offer a veritable host of verging-on-novelty knitwear to see you through the wintery months.

Style needn’t be serious, and designers who imbue their pieces with a running sense of humour are those who should control your jumper of choice. The king of such pop-culture fashion is Jeremy Scott, who, in the vein of old hats like Jc de Castelbajac, is heading up a new group of designers who like to play with their themes and run with them - that is, run with them right up to the horizons of ‘good taste.’
If blatant sloganised messages aren’t your thing, of course, you can always turn to the Fair Isle-knits on offer for a bit of festive cheer in your wardrobe. For F/W 10, for example, D&G presented a veritable apres-ski party in knitwear form, with Fair Isle all-in-ones teamed with somewhat ominous looking Yeti Boots. For me, I particularly like the subtler British sense of humour of Bella Freud’s knits, such as her ‘Oh!’ jumper - the perfect reflection of your reaction upon opening a less-than-welcome gift come Christmas Day (‘Oh! Thanks, I never knew I needed one of these…’)
In fact, there is such a diverse range of fun, fashionable knitwear out there that you may have trouble finding just the one. But, whether you’re looking for blatant Christmas vibes, such as Andrea Crews’ reindeer number, or subtler festive patterns, such as Sonia Rykiel’s stripes, you are sure to find one that will thoroughly kick out any hint of Scrooge in you.
