The No-Dress Party Formula
The no dress party formula: its no stress, no sweat, and well, no dress. The Christmas party season needn’t mean dusting down a trusty, albeit moth-ravaged, LBD - nor must it mean investing in the single most heavily-embellished dress you are just about able to lift over your head to try on in the shop. There are a multitude of other party options this season - from shorts, to jackets to even, er, kimonos…
Firstly, there’s the fail-safe sexy shorts combo: that is, sexy sequin shorts, keeping everything else sleek and plain as Jane. Just add ankle boots, and try not to be too uncomfortable when sitting down.
Secondly, try turning to a more modern twist on the tux. Janelle Monae is a perfect example: she looks ‘le Smoking’ in her signature white tux look. For the less brave, try a bow-tie design necklace with a plain white tee. With black cigarette trousers, such as these sleek, gold-flecked trousers from 3.1 Phillip Lim, it’s a winning party look.
Another trend to take hold of this party season is a little more surprising. If you have a Kimono in your dressing up box somewhere, perfect - if not, listen up. Kimono-style jackets are the perfect dramatic party cover-up, whether with skinny trousers or even with a maxi-skirt for the ultimate in dramatic entrances (arms flailing, fabric-swishing…). Just see Fashion Squad’s vintage kimono-sporting, or check out the Olsen’s take on the shape at Elizabeth and James.

So, all in all, purchasing your perfect party dress needn’t be your raison d’etre this party saison - besides, who wants to risk wearing the same as everyone else?
